The purpose of the study was to determine the long-term effects of attending schools in which a physical activity intervention was implemented during the 9th grade, and to identify factors that mediate and moderate changes in physical activity in girls during their high school years.

Trial of Activity for Adolescent Girls (TAAG)
The major goal of this project was to examine the effects of a comprehensive, school-based, community-linked intervention on physical activity and physical fitness in middle school girls. The project was part of a collaborative, multi-center trial including 6 field sites (University of South Carolina, University of Arizona, University of Maryland, University of Minnesota, San Diego State University, Tulane University) and a coordinating center (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill).

The purposes of this investigation are to further hone and demonstrate sustainability and dissemination of the intervention.

Middle School Physical Activity Intervention for Girls
The major goals of this project are to test the feasibility of and obtain preliminary evidence of efficacy for a 6-month “Girls on the Move” intervention (guided by the Health Promotion Model and Social Cognitive Theory) that uses monthly motivational, individually tailored counseling sessions plus after-school physical activity (PA) to increase MVPA and fitness, as well as improve body composition and cognition and affective responses related to MVPA among 6th-grade girls.

Short and Long Term Effectiveness of Exergames for Young Adults
There are two main purposes of this investigation. The first purpose is to design a physically active video game for college students, both male and female, and test how much energy is expended while playing the game. The second purpose is to devise an intervention to increase physical activity in sedentary college students using the finished product of the game.

Multi-Component Intervention to Increase Physical Activity in Preschool Children
The purpose of this project is to examine the effects of a multi-component intervention that is designed to increase physical activity energy expenditure in 3- to 5-year-old children. Preschool-based components include high-quality physical education, active recess periods, physical activity integrated into learning, and changes to the physical and social environment to promote physical activity.

One major goal of the project is to assess the longitudinal validity of accelerometer energy expenditure prediction equations and physical activity count cutpoints in children and adolescents. The other major goal is to examine the sensitivity to change of accelerometry as a measure of physical activity.

Community and School Partnership to Increase Activity and Improve Nutrition
The goals of this project will be to: 1) Conduct formative assessment with community stakeholders interested in addressing health disparities in minority children and families in Flint, Michigan; 2) Develop and implement a community-based intervention to increase physical activity and improve dietary behaviors in minority children and families in four neighborhoods of Flint, Michigan; and 3) Assess the effects of the intervention on health-related variables (physical activity, dietary behaviors, BMI z-score, etc.) in minority children and primary caregivers.

Girls on the Move Intervention
The purpose of this school-based cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be to test the efficacy of our intervention multi-component intervention including motivational interviewing by school nurses and an after-school physical activity club to increase MVPA among middle school girls. Secondary outcomes will include CV fitness (number of laps run), body mass index (BMI), and % body fat (% BF).We will also examine if MVPA is mediated by cognitive and affective variables.
